New Taipei City to Offer Free YouBike Rides for First 30 Minutes Starting in 2025

New Taipei City has announced that starting in early 2025, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the first 30 minutes of YouBike rentals free of charge. The move is part of the city’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation and reduce traffic congestion, making it easier and more affordable for people to use bicycles for short trips.

Key Details

The new policy, expected to be implemented in the first quarter of 2025, will allow users to ride YouBikes for up to 30 minutes without any cost. Currently, users are charged NT$5 for the first half-hour, with the city government already covering another NT$5 for each ride. With the new initiative, the city hopes to further increase ridership and reduce reliance on motor vehicles for short-distance travel.

New Taipei City’s YouBike network currently boasts over 21,000 bicycles and 1,300 rental stations. City officials have also announced plans to add 200 more stations by next year to meet the anticipated rise in demand.

Benefits and Impact

The new free ride policy is expected to lead to a 15% increase in YouBike usage, according to city projections. Officials see this as a major step toward reducing carbon emissions and alleviating traffic congestion.

Bicycle transportation not only helps cut down on air pollution but also offers a convenient alternative to driving, particularly for short commutes. With the elimination of the NT$5 charge for the first 30 minutes, more residents are likely to turn to YouBikes for quick trips within the city.

Mayor’s Statement

Speaking about the initiative, New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi highlighted its importance in promoting green transportation. “Encouraging the use of YouBikes through free rides will not only help reduce the city’s carbon footprint but also make everyday commuting more convenient for our residents,” he said.

The mayor added that this policy is part of the city’s broader plan to develop more sustainable urban infrastructure, with a focus on reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

Expansion Plans

In anticipation of increased ridership, the city plans to continue expanding the YouBike network by adding more stations and bicycles across New Taipei. The goal is to ensure that the growing demand for YouBikes is met and that residents have easy access to bike-sharing options throughout the city.

YouBike

With the introduction of free 30-minute YouBike rides in 2025, New Taipei City is taking a bold step toward fostering a greener, more sustainable urban environment. By making bicycle-sharing more accessible, the city hopes to ease traffic congestion, improve air quality, and encourage more residents to opt for eco-friendly transportation alternatives.

This initiative could serve as a model for other cities looking to promote cycling and reduce their environmental impact while improving the overall quality of life for their citizens.
